Common Dental Emergencies and What to Do About Them

Here’s how to take care of yourself prior to seeing your dentist if you run into these dental emergencies:

• Chipped, broken, or knocked-out tooth: If the chip is small and the tooth doesn’t hurt, it’s probably not an emergency. Otherwise, rinse the tooth or fragment with water. Be careful not to disturb the root tissue inside. Then, carefully reposition it or submerge it in a cup of milk or water to preserve the tooth strutcture.
• Loose tooth: Gently reposition the tooth. If this isn’t possible, hold it under your tongue until your dentist can stabilize it with splints.
• Toothache, cracked or fractured tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress for the swelling. To alleviate pain, you can take acetaminophen or apply clove oil to the gums.
• Bitten tongue, cheek or lip: This common annoyance usually betters with time, but if the affected area is swollen and bleeding continues, place a cold compress on it and visit your dentist or emergency room immediately.
• Broken jaw or misalignment: Apply a cold compress to the face and see your dentist or the emergency room ASAP.
